heroic narratives but also profound reflections on philosophical, ethical, and existential concepts. Irony, as a significant literary device, manifests in three forms: dramatic, situational, and fate-driven, playing a crucial role in suspense, surprise, and narrative depth. This study, using an analytical-descriptive approach, examines irony in the Shahnameh’s characters and illustrates how it highlights internal contradictions and tragic fates. The irony in characters such as Rostam, Sohrab, Esfandiar, Kay Khosrow, Jamshid, and Kavous reflects Ferdowsi’s views on fate, free will, and the downfall of power. For instance, in the tragedy of Rostam and Sohrab, the audience knows the truth while the characters remain unaware, trapped by destiny. Similarly, Esfandiar’s fate reveals the paradox between human will and predetermined destiny. Situational irony appears in narratives such as Jamshid’s downfall and Kavous’s defeat, where ambition and arrogance lead to destruction. Ultimately, Shahnameh, through irony, particularly in the destinies of heroes, emphasizes themes such as the impermanence of power and the unintended consequences of human actions, inviting readers to reflect on human fate and the limitations of power.
