Abstract

Nonwithstanding the significance of selecting and commg Persian equivalents for foreign words and terms as well as establishment of several organizations for undertaking the job, there are few academic Persian works on this subject, insofar as no comprehensive study has been accomplished about the approved terms of the three academies established by now. Thus many of theoretical aspects and practical problems concerning the issue have not set forth yet. The present survey is aimed at conceptualized criticizing the principles and criteria of the third Persian Academy (Academy of Persian Language and Literature) for term-selection and a subtle analysis of morphological, semantic and pragmatic restrictions for acceptibility of its approved general terms. The approach taken in this survey is synchronic and intralingual. Synchronic means that we consider Persian language in its contemporary state, not over time; and by 'intralingual' we mean that in studying the approved terms, the main attention is paid to the structure of lexemes and sense relations between lingual units within the language system; so non-linguistic factors such as sociological and psychological restrictions for accepting new lexemes are rarely taken into account.
