Abstract

The issue of understanding plays a major role in hermeneutics. Most philosophers just focus on the interpretation of the text but some others such as Hans-Georg Gadamer and Martin Heidegger have carefully analyzed the understanding (verstehen). In other words they pay more attention to the ontology of understanding and to the context in which understanding is better achieved rather than how to render a text understandable. Since Mowlana (Rumi) has always been considered as a poet, less attention has been paid to the philosophical aspects of his thoughts. This article is an attempt to demonstrate that Mowlana is a pioneer of philosophical hermeneutics, for he put forward some major issues on understanding and its problems. Hermeneuticians argue that he has explained the ontology of understanding and its relation to the levels of human beings existence.
