Abstract
The re-correction of ancient texts possesses scientific validity only when undertaken with systematic precision, reliance upon authoritative sources, and the explicit aim of resolving the deficiencies and ambiguities present in prior editions, thereby rendering a text approximating the author's original wording accessible to researchers. In accordance with this principle, the present study was conducted to examine the validity and accuracy of Iraj Gol Sorkhi's correction of the Divan of Kamal al-Din Khojandi, a distinguished poet of the eighth century AH. The research employed the library method alongside the method of textual comparison and contrast—both fundamental approaches in codicological and manuscript studies. Gol Sorkhi's corrected text was compared with two original manuscripts (numbered 264 and 266) held in the library of the Shahid Motahari High School. The data derived from this comparison, encompassing discrepancies in transcription, semantic interpretation, and other variables, were subjected to examination and interpretation via qualitative content analysis (Sarmadi, 1378, p. 207). Analysis of the data revealed that the aforementioned correction exhibits numerous structural and substantive deficiencies, including erroneous transcription of words, neglect of authoritative manuscript witnesses, orthographic errors, and misinterpretation of poetic verses. The substantial divergences between this correction and the original manuscripts exceed acceptable parameters and have consequently undermined its scientific credibility. Thus, the production of a new correction grounded in the principles of manuscript studies and drawing upon original sources constitutes an undeniable scholarly necessity—one that may furnish a foundation for more precise and reliable inquiry within the field of Persian poetry.
