The function of Narrative Point of View and Semes in the Formation of Ideological Discourse of Ancient Theological Texts in Iran Based on Roger Fowler’s Literary Theories

Abstract

The importance of the relation between linguistic elements with literary and narrative elements in the study of various texts is more than ever considered by literary critics as well as linguists. This paper aimed to investigate how the ideological discourse was formed in “The Book of Arda Viraf” as an ancient and theological work dating from ancient Iran, featuring levels of narrative point of view and semes. The current study seeks to answer how the book has formed its ideological discourse as the dominant discourse representing a set of values and beliefs to the readers by using three different levels of point of view (spatial, psychological, and ideological). Jaleh Amouzgar’s translation of the French text written by Philippe Gignoux was selected to answer this question while considering the text transliteration. The main core of the theoretical foundation of the present paper is Roger Fowler’s views as a well-known linguist in literary criticism, and the views of Halliday, Uspensky, and Genette were also used to expand analyses in the theoretical section. The findings of the present study, obtained through the descriptive-analytical method and direct examination of a study sample, indicated that despite the anonymity of the book’s author and its non-literary nature as an ancient theological text, the book developed its dominant discourse from the beginning of the story due to the use of different narrative and linguistic elements.
