Abstract

Abstract:

Pondering over some stories and narrations of mystical texts will result in observing a shift in some characters and protagonists. These characters are different from one story to another even though the general themes and motifs of the stories are the same. As they are the main storytelling medium, each character has its specific functions. Therefore, characters and their functions are inseparable. Because of this important fact, mystical writers have made numerous changes to their characters to add variety, attraction, theatrical capability to facilitate the teaching effect of their story, and effect on the readers. These changes ranged from two characters to fourteen, in some cases. The author has tried to explore these character shifts in the mystical texts from the fourth to ninth century AH, by using the descriptive-analytical method and also to find the reason behind this storytelling trick, by analyzing thirty-five stories from these texts. This article also shows how the mystical experiences of the writer, his ideologies, his dreaming and dream telling, and his loyalty to the original text, which was at his disposal, have affected these character shifts in his stories.
